Tourist board website design has to answer two questions. Why should a visitor who has never heard of the destination come, and how do you show someone already on the way, as quickly as possible, where to go, where to eat and where to stay? For Turistička zajednica općine Lekenik (Lekenik Tourist Board) we built the new visitlekenik.hr website. It is a destination portal with an interactive map, an events calendar and listings of accommodation and places to eat, available in Croatian, English and German.
From a list of posts to a destination portal
On the previous website, accommodation, restaurants, cafés, associations and events were ordinary posts sorted into categories. The content was there, but visitors could neither filter it nor see it on a map.
The new website handles each type of content separately: attractions, accommodation, food and drink, associations, documents and events each have their own entries and their own layout. When the tourist board adds a new venue or event, it appears automatically on the right pages and on the map. All content from the old website was moved into the new structure, and the old URLs were permanently redirected so the destination would not lose its existing Google rankings.
Advanced features for visitors
- Interactive map with eleven categories, from active holidays and cultural, religious and film heritage to accommodation, food and drink and useful services. Visitors filter what interests them and immediately see where it is.
- Events calendar with festivals and events all year round, from St George's Day (Jurjevo) to the Kupa river boat race.
- Lekenik weather forecast built right into the website, with the current temperature and the outlook for the coming days.
- Accommodation and dining with filters by type of venue, so families, cyclists or business guests quickly find what suits them.
- Document archive sorted by type and year, with search. The acts, calls and reports that the tourist board is required to publish are available in one place.
- Three language versions, a gallery organised by theme and a header video on the home page, prepared so it does not slow down loading.
The tourist board edits all of this itself, with no coding knowledge. Texts are changed directly on the pages, while listings, documents and events are added through simple forms.
Design that captures the spirit of Turopolje
Lekenik is a peaceful destination between Zagreb and Sisak. It has the Kupa river, wooden chapels, folklore and home cooking, and we wanted the design to keep that feeling. The blue of the river, aerial footage and photos of people and local customs guide visitors through what is on offer, while clear navigation opens any part of the portal in a few clicks.
In tourist board website design, the mobile phone is the most important screen, because the map, contacts and calendar are most often opened on the go. That is why every part of the portal is adapted to smaller screens and touch.
SEO and loading speed
We carried out thorough SEO: every page has a focus keyword, a title and a description for search engines, images have alt texts, and the language versions are correctly linked for Google. Today Visit Lekenik ranks near the top of Google for destination-related searches and achieves high scores in the Google PageSpeed test.
